Section A Reading

Question 1.
Read the passage given below.

The art of living is learnt easily by those who are positive and optimistic. From humble and simple people to great leaders in history, science or literature, we can learn a lot about the art of living, by having a peep into their lives. The daily routines of these great men not only reveal their different, maybe unique life styles, but also help us learn certain habits and practices they followed. Here are some read, enjoy and follow in their footsteps as it suits you.

A private workplace always helps. Jane Austen asked that a certain squeaky hinge should never be oiled so that she always had a warning whenever someone was approaching the room where she wrote. William Faulkner, lacking a lock on his study door, detached the doorknob and brought it into the room with him.

Mark Twain’s family knew better than to breach his study door-they would blow a horn to draw him out. Graham Greene went even further, renting a secret office only his wife knew the address and the telephone number. After all, every one of us needs a workplace where we can work on our creation uninterruptedly. Equally, we need our private space too!

A daily walk has always been a source of inspiration. For many artists, a regular stroll was essentially a creative inspiration. Charles Dickens famously took three-hour walks every afternoon, and what he observed on them fed directly into his writing. 19th-century composer Erik Satie did the same on his long hikes from Paris to the working-class suburb where he lived, stopping under street lamps to jot down ideas that came on his journey it’s rumored that when those lamps were turned off during the war years, his music declined too. Many great people had limited social life too.

The routines of these thinkers are difficult. Perhaps it is because they are so unattainable. The very idea that you can organise your time as you like is out of reach for most of us, so I’ll close with a toast to all those who worked with difficulties.

Like Francine Prose, who began writing when the school bus picked up her children and stopped when it brought them backor T.S. Eliot, who found it much easier to write once he had a day job in a bank than he had as a starving poet. Being forced to follow someone else’s routine may irritate, but it makes it easier to stay on the path. Whenever we break that trail ourselves or take an easy path of least resistance, perhaps what’s most important is that we keep walking.

Based on your understanding of the passage, answer any eight questions from the nine given below. (1 x 8)

(i) How can we learn the art of living? (1)
(ii) State one reason that justifies Graham Greeme’s decision to have a secret workspace. (1)

(ii) Who do you think made the call to announce a correction in the question paper? What was its purpose? (Evans Tries on O-level) (2)
(iii) What image does the poet use to describe the beautiful bounty of the earth? Mention any four things of beauty that add joy to our life. (2)

(v) How do we know that ordinary people too contributed to the freedom movement? (Indigo) (2)
(vi) Do you think that the ironmaster would have forwarded the invitation if he had known the man was not Nils Olof? Give reasons for your answer. (2)
Answer:
(i) At the end of the play, Derry realises that external looks do not matter much. The only thing that matters is the person’s worth. He also realises that it is only his opinion that are important for him and no one else’s. As a result, he decides that now he would not care about anybody. He will care about what he feels, thinks or hears.

(ii) I think one of Evans’ accomplices impersonating the Assistant Secretary from the examination board would have called the Governor to announce a correction in the question paper. The real purpose was to give away information about the escape plan to Evans.

(iii) The poet says that there are a number of things that make the earth beautiful. These things are like a fountain of immortal drink which is pouring unto us from the heaven’s brink. The things of beauty that add joy to our life are the sun, the moon, the trees, daffodils, simple sheep, clear rills, musk roses and the stories related to our ancestors.

(iv) The ordeals that surround Aunt Jennifer are all the responsibilities and duties that she has due to her marriage. The marital responsibilities are no less than ordeals for her because willingly or unwillingly she has to do them. The word ‘ringed’ has been used to convey that Aunt Jennifer is so surrounded and imprisoned by her ordeals that she can never think to come out of them.

(v) It was only due to the support of ordinary people that the sharecroppers of Champaran could get justice. When Gandhiji was arrested in Motihari, ordinary people flocked on the roads in large numbers. As a result, the government had to drop the case against Gandhiji. If the common masses had not revolted, then the Champaran episode would not have succeeded.

(vi) The ironmaster would not have forwarded the invitation if he had known the man was not Nils Olof. We know this because later when he gets to know about the stranger’s real identity he gets angry and wanted to give the man away to the police.

Question 6.
Answer any two of the following in about 120-150 words each. (4 x 2)

(i) What are the instances in the story that show that the character of the ironmaster is different from that of his daughter in many ways? (4)
(ii) Analyse the theme of creative expression and personal freedom with respect to Aunt Jennifer’s tigers. (4)
(iii) Roger Skunk’s mother finds the smell of roses detestable on Roger, implying that he should accept himself as he is. Adults, as well as young people, are often misjudging issues, people and circumstances based on appearance. Comment with respect to the chapter ‘Should Wizard Hit Mommy? (4)
Answer:
(i) Ironmaster and his daughter are poles apart as far as their character and temperament are concerned. The ironmaster is very practical as well as a responsible person. He makes regular visits to the forge to see whether the work is done properly or not. He mistakes the peddler to be one of his regimental acquaintances.

He is moved to see his miserable condition and wants to help him. Therefore he invites him to his home. But when he finds that the man is not one of his regimental acquaintances and is just a tramp, he orders him to get out of his house.

In contrast Edla, the ironmaster’s daughter is a very kind-hearted girl. Though she comes to know the peddler’s truth she still treats him as if he were really a Captain. She treats him as an equal. Her kindness and compassion affects the peddler greatly. We can say she proves to be an angel in the peddler’s life. It is only because of her that he decides to give up thievery and lead a meaningful and honest life.

(ii) ‘Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers’ by Adrienne Rich essentially deals with the theme of female submission under a male-dominated society. However, within this larger theme, the poem also deals with the concept of creative expression and personal freedom. The poem describes the life of Aunt Jennifer, a woman who cannot escape her subservient role in her marriage. Hampered by her fear, the one form of escape Aunt Jennifer does have is through her creative work-crafting tapestry panels that show bold and proud tigers.

Aunt Jennifer turns to needlework as a creative outlet, a means of coping with her difficult marriage and escaping her oppressive reality. The tapestry panels show tigers ‘prancing, proud and unafraid.’ This mood contrasts sharply with the seemingly meek and scared character of Aunt Jennifer herself.

While the tigers are walking confidently, Aunt Jennifer can barely pull the ivory needle through her wool, due to the weight of ‘Uncle’s wedding band.’ The speaker describes how Aunt Jennifer’s marriage is an obstacle to her creativity, but the poem makes it clear that, at least in life, she continues her art nonetheless.

The poem argues that through her art Aunt Jennifer finds an escape that not even death will grant her. Jennifer herself may not be free, but her tapestries and their tigers are. Perhaps Aunt Jennifer finds comfort in this creative expression, crafting a bold tapestry that will outlive her and that her art is, liberated from man-made constraints like marriage.

(iii) Roger Skunk’s mother finds the smell of roses detestable on Roger, implying that he should accept himself as he is. Adults, as well as young people, are often misjudging issues, people and circumstances based on appearance. And it is true and sad that today people are more focused on external beauty. Demand for the fair-complexioned bride or handsome groom is there in the matrimonial columns of every newspaper.

CBSE Sample Papers for Class 12 English Term 2 Set 8 with Solutions

However, we must remember that appearances are often deceptive. It is person’s internal beauty that matters. In this story, Roger Skunk is annoyed at his natural smell. It is the law of nature that every creature is given some protective device to save itself from its enemy. The foul smell of the skunks keeps the predators away.

But Roger Skunk does not like his particular skunk smell. His only concern is his playmates that run away from him due to his foul smell. Therefore, he goes to the wizard and gets the fragrance of the roses.

When he enters his home his mommy becomes very angry. She goes to the wizard and hits him on his head and Roger gets back his original and natural smell. This shows how our preoccupation with external beauty is flawed and wrong.
