Section A Reading

Question 1.
Read the passage given below.

Academics has always been an essential part of human development. It prepares us to survive in the outside world and establish an identity of our own. But, is an individual’s development restricted to merely academics? In India, from an early age, we have been taught that education is limited to the boundaries of academics only; the idea of getting out into the field, for gaining practical experience, is always considered a hoax. This has hindered students’ development. But, the truth is that education represents a considerably broader field than we know of it. Our teaching, from the basics, has been focused on getting good grades and job offers, rather than being creative and unique.

In the 21st century, the pure academic type of education is slowly paving way for a whole new type. The paradigm shift in the whole education system is evident. People have now come to understand that education is a 360 degree activity that should focus on students’ overall development, rather than restricting him/her to the classroom.

Co-curricular activities that take place outside the classroom but reinforce or supplement classroom curriculum, in some way, have become a point of focus today. These activities help in the growth of the child, in more than one way. Participating in such activities helps youngsters grow mentally, socially and individually. Intellectual development of a student is developed in the classroom, but for the aesthetic development such as team-building, character-building, and physical growth, students must step out into the outside world. For instance, if a student is a part of school football team, he/ she will learn team work and coordination, in a practical manner, which cannot be taught in the class.

Similarly, in colleges and institutions, there is a need for practical exposure so that the students can experience the actual working of an industry. For example, taking a student to a manufacturing firm will give him/ her the real insight and better learning of the industry.

Catering to this change, most professional colleges including Bschools, have started providing practical exposure to students through regular guest lectures, industrial visits, conferences, seminars, cultural festivals, and so on. With industry visits, students are able to better identify their prospective areas of work in the overall organisational function. Moreover, they help enhance interpersonal skills and communication techniques. In addition, guest lectures are equally important for all-around development of students. It is a great way for students to gain maximum exposure, as guest speakers talk about their real-life experiences and not what is there in the text books.

Through such events, students are made to participate and coordinate different events wherein, they get to know how exactly things are managed. Classroom teaching provides the foundation, and co-curricular or extra curricular activities provide practical exposure and opportunities to implement what students learn in the classroom. This helps in developing the overall personality of the students, inculcating various soft – skills in them, which otherwise are difficult to teach. Clearly, life beyond academics creates creative and empowered professionals.

Based on your understanding of the passage, answer any eight questions from the nine given below. (1 x 8)

(i) Cite a point in evidence, from the text, to suggest that the author is skeptical of Indian education. (1)

Question 2.
Read the passage given below.

A Global Breakdown of Greenhouse Gas Emissions by Sector In a few decades, greenhouse gases (GHGs)-chiefly in the form of CO2 emissions-have risen at unprecedented rates as a result of global growth and resource consumption. Global greenhouse gas emissions can also be broken down by the economic activities that lead to their production.

Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions by Economic Sector
CBSE Sample Papers for Class 12 English Term 2 Set 6 with Solutions 1

Electricity and Heat Production The burning of coal, natural gas, and oil for electricity and heat is the largest single source of global greenhouse gas emissions. Industry Greenhouse gas emissions from industry primarily involve fossil fuels burned on site at facilities for energy. This sector also includes emissions from chemical, metallurgical, and mineral transformation processes not associated with energy consumption and emissions from waste management activities.

Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use Greenhouse gas emissions from this sector come mostly from agriculture (cultivation of crops and livestock) and deforestation. This estimate does not include the CO2 that ecosystems remove from the atmosphere by sequestering carbon in biomass, dead organic matter and soils, which offset approximately 20% of emissions from this sector.

Transportation Greenhouse gas emissions from this sector primarily involve fossil fuels burned for road, rail, air, and marine transportation. Almost all (95%) of the world’s transportation energy comes from petroleum-based fuels, largely gasoline and diesel.

Buildings Greenhouse gas emissions from this sector arise from onsite energy generation and burning fuels for heat in buildings or cooking in homes.

Other Energy This source of greenhouse gas emissions refers to all emissions from the energy sector which are not directly associated with electricity or heat production, such as fuel extraction, refining, processing, and transportation.

Section C Literature

Question 5.
Attempt any five of the six questions given below, within 40 words each. (2 x 5)
(i) Validate Gandhiji’s objection to CF Andrews’ stay in Champaran. (2)
(ii) Why did the peddler keep to the woods after leaving the crofter’s cottage? How did he feel? (2)
(iii) What did Derry’s mother think of Mr. Lamb? Do you think her judgment is correct? (2)
(iv) Why does Jo insist that her father should tell her the story with a different ending? (2)
(v) How do ‘denizens’ and ‘chivalric’ add to our understanding of the tiger’s attitudes? (2)
(vi) For Keats, ‘grandeur’ is associated with the mighty dead. Substantiate. (2)
Answer:
(i) CF Andrews, an English pacifist, was a devoted follower of Gandhiji. The lawyers thought that bejng an Englishman, Andrews could be of immense help to them in their cause of fighting the battle of Champaran. Gandhiji, however, was against this because he felt that enlisting an Englishman’s help showed weakness. Their cause was just, and they had to win the battle by relying on themselves. This would make them self-reliant.

(ii) After stealing the money from the crofter’s, the peddler was cautious to avoid the public highway lest he be identified and caught. He got into the woods but finally realised that it was a big and confusing forest. The end of the forest was nowhere in sight and he felt lost. That’s when he recalled his thoughts about the world being a rattrap and he realised that he had indeed become a victim of a rattrap.

(iii) Derry’s mother did not think very highly of Mr. Lamb and claimed to have heard not really good things about him. She had been told and warned by people about Mr. Lamb and so she tells Derry not to go back to him. She also tried to hold him back but he does go back to Mr. Lamb. No, I do not find her judgment to be correct as it is Mr. Lamb who motivates and fills Derry with optimism.

(iv) A child’s perspective is different from an adult’s perspective. For Jo, Roger Skunk’s mother is wicked and stupid and she feels rather annoyed with her for making Roger smell bad again. She wanted a happy ending to the story and so she insists that her father should tell her the story where the wizard should hit mommy in the end.

(v) The words ‘Denizens’ and ‘chivalric’ adds to our understanding of tigers in the context of the poem. The word ‘denizen’ denotes occupants or citizens and ‘chivalric’ points to fearlessness, honour, bravery and majesty possessed by the tigers. Looking at these characteristics, we assume that tigers are very possessive about their territory. They live on their own terms and fear none, as they regard themselves superior in their own domain which is what the Aunt aspires to be.

(vi) The mighty dead are those who have laid down their lives for a great or noble cause. Their death is replete with intellectual and spiritual beauty. Birth, growth and decay, all are inseparable. Each has its own beauty. Their death is grand or beautiful because it makes them immortal through the grand tombs and memorials erected in their honour.

Question 6.
Answer any two of the following in about 120-150 words each. (4 x 2)
(i) The story ‘The Rattrap’ has many instances of unexpected reactions from the characters to other’s behavior. Pick out instances of these surprises and critically analyse them. (4)
(ii) Analyse the symbols and poetic devices employed in the poem Aunt Jennifer’s tigers. (4)
(iii) When Stephens comes back to the cell he jumps to a conclusion and the whole machinery blindly goes by his assumption without even checking the identity of the injured ‘McLeery’. Do you think Evans predicted this mistake? (4)
Answer:
(i) The story ‘Rattrap’ has many instances of unexpected reactions from the character to others behavior. In the first instance we can note contradictions in the character of the rattrap seller. He sells his self-made rattraps and does petty thievery but he has no mind of begging. Rather he possesses a philosophical attitude towards life.

The second surprising reaction is of the crofter. The peddler never expected the hospitality given to him. He expected as usual a sour face. But the crofter gave him food and tobacco and played cards with him. It was not only the peddler’s fate to come across unexpected reactions. But other characters have also their share.

The iron master does not understand why his supposed friend is insistent on living in the forge. When his daughter comes to persuade the peddler, the peddler’s reaction of fear was very unexpected to her. The peddler was not surprised when he was asked to leave by the ironmaster but Edla’s behaviour surprised him a great deal. He feels it to be ‘crazy idea.’

Last but not least, the peddler’s reaction to the young girl’s kindness was also most unexpected. No one could think that the thief would leave the house not only without taking anything away but on the contrary leaving a decent present for the young lady. The girl was rightly and of course, pleasantly surprised.

(ii) Adrienne Rich has aptly used a number of images, symbols and poetic devices in the poem to convey the theme. The tigers symbolise the freedom of spirit which Aunt Jennifer dreams of attaining, but never achieves them except in her art. Aunt Jennifer metaphorically represents all women as a group, women who are victims of male superiority and domination. Tigers symbolise the true nature of a woman’s free soul that values strength and assertion.

There lies a metaphor in the implied comparison of the tigers to the bright topaz denizens where tigers are considered to be the inhabitants of the forest, crafted green world on the panel. The tigers are also attributed with the quality of chivalry in their confidence. The alliteration in ‘fingers signify Jennifer’s physical feebleness.’ She therefore finds it difficult to pull the ivory needle. The alliteration ‘prancing proud’ in complete contrast signifies the everlasting strength of the tigers.

(iii) When Stephens comes back to the cell he jumps to a conclusion and the whole machinery blindly goes by his assumption without even checking the identity of the injured ‘McLeery’. I think Evans had predicted this mistake. Evans was a smart criminal. He had beforehand assessed the weaknesses of the jail officers successfully and thus has planned in a manner that would befool everyone.

Going by his predictions, when Stephens saw the injured McLeery in the cell he at once jumped to the conclusion that Evans had escaped from the prison. He did not even check who he really was and neither did anyone else. It did not occur to anyone to question how there could Evans injure the invigilator and dress so quickly to pass of as Mclerry.

It was for this very reason that friends of Evans, who, posing as the Governor on the phone, have directed Stephens that he himself should escort the parson out, when the exam is finished. The Governor and his officers, lead Evans out of the prison. The question paper is left behind to mislead the Governor. This shows that Evans-type criminals had enough time to study the behavior patterns of the jail officers and plan their strategy well.
