(iii) Keats finds beauty in traditions and myths as well. Substantiate. (2)

(v) If you were to give a different ending to the story, ‘On The Face of It’ how would you end it? (2)
(vi) What clues did the answer sheet of Evans provide to the Governor? Do you think it helped the Governor in his task? (2)
Answer:
(i) The author’s decision to end the letter written by the peddler as Captain Von Stahle was apt to bring out the theme of kindness and compassion in the story. The Rattrap peddler changes due to the kindness and compassion shown to him. He was treated as a Captain even though everyone knew he was not so. As a result, he changed which is reflected in his ending the letter as a Captain.

(ii) The treatment that Gandhiji received at Rajendra Prasad’s house is symbolic of the social evil of untouchability present during those times. Gandhiji was mistaken to be an untouchable by people and was treated badly. He wasn’t allowed to draw water from the well considering that his touch could pollute the well.

(iii) It is aptly said that Keats finds beauty in traditions and myths as well. He finds that the stories of our ancestors that has been passed dowri as tradition is as beautiful as the nature that surrounds us. The stories of our past and all the myths that we have heard or read in some books are for him things of beauty.

(iv) Aunt Jennifer created tigers that are so different from her own character to express her desires and wants. Aunt Jennifer’s reality is subservience and submission. She is stuck in her unsatisfactory and limiting marital life. She desires freedom which she cannot achieve as she cannot escape her reality. So, she creates her tigers to reflect the freedom and courage that she wants to possess.

(v) The ending of the story, ‘On The Face of It’ is very sad as Mr. Lamb is probably dead. In my opinion, such a beautiful story should not have such a tragic ending. So, if I were to give a different ending to the story, I would have allowed Derry to save Mr. Lamb from falling by holding the ladder at the last moment. This would have given a message of hope and friendship.

(vi) The index number 313 and the centre number 271 on the answer sheet proved to be the dues for the Governor. Putting the two together and with the help of the Ordnance Survey Map for Oxfordshire, he managed to catch Evans in the hotel.

Question 6.
Answer any two of the following in about 120-150 words each. (4 x 2)

(i) Why did Gandhiji agree to a settlement of 25% refund to the farmers? How does it relate to his humanitarian motive? (4)
(ii) Keats says that a beautiful thing is a source of endless joy. Comment with reference to the poem ‘A Thing of Beauty’. (4)
(iii) Roger Skunk’s mother hit the wizard on his head. Do you think it was right on her part to do so? Should the wizard hit Roger Skunk’s mother? (4)
Answer:
(i) To reach the resolution of the Champaran Sharecropping case, Gandhiji agreed to a refund of only 25% because for him the amount of refund was not important. For him, what mattered was that the landlords were obliged to surrender a part of their money and a prestige.

This is essentially related to his humanitarian cause by virtue of focusing on betterment of Indian in general. In the process of reaching the resolution, Gandhiji started to mould a new modem Indian who knew his rights. This modem Indian knew his power and that he could oppose the British authority.

Even after the Champaran battle was won and the land reverted to the peasants, Gandhiji continued to stay on in the region. He realised that a lot needed to be done for the upliftment of the peasants in the villages of Champaran. Gandhiji took the initiative and began the work of eradicating their cultural and social backwardness.

(ii) In the poem, ‘A Thing of Beauty’ written by the famous poet John Keats, the poet says that a beautiful thing is a source of endless joy. It has eternal beauty which never fades away. A beautiful thing is like a shady shelter that gives us a sleep full of sweet dreams, good health, and relaxation. The Earth is full of hatred, greed, and negativity. According to the poet, the gloom and sadness caused by this negativity fades away with the positive vibes of the beautiful things that surround us.

The poet lists out some of the beautiful things that surround us. He says that the numerous creations of God like the Sun, the moon, and the trees are the natural beauties around us. The various animals like the sheep and the pretty flowers like daffodils make the world green and lively. The flowing streams of water cool and refresh us in the hot summer season. The forests which are full of the pretty musk rose flowers are a beautiful sight to the eye.

All these are the things of beauty. Also, the stories of the brave soldiers who laid their lives to protect their people are beautiful and inspiring. These beautiful things are like a fountain of immortality bestowed upon us by God. They inspire us to live on and maintain our faith in goodness.

(iii) Roger Skunk’s mother was angry at the wizard for changing the smell of her young one. The smell was what made a skunk different from the other animals. In fact, this was what created the individuality which she was so proud of. For her, it was more important to retain that individual characteristic rather than having friends.

So when the wizard changed Roger Skunk’s smell into the beautiful smell of roses, it made her very angry. In her anger and without waiting for any justification from her son, she marched towards the wizard’s house, hit him on his head and demanded the young Skunk to be given back its smell.

In my opinion, it was wrong on the part of Roger Skunk’s mother to hit the wizard, since the wizard did not force Roger to change his smell and was in fact abiding by his wishes, trying to make him happy. Instead of checking up on the reason, she went and hit, which I believe was absolutely wrong. She could have instead talked and sorted it out with him.

No, it would be wrong for the wizard to hit Roger Skunk’s mother. First, her actions were a result of her love for her young one. Second, hitting in response would have only made it a bigger issue and then there would have been no end to the whole thing.
