1. Read the following passage carefully.
1    It is customary for the British monarch to ride in a gilded horse-drawn ornamental carriage for the opening of the parliament. This year, the Queen rode a brand-new Australian built carriage, made to commemorate her diamond jubilee. The coach, an exact copy of the earlier one, contains nearly a thousand years ‘of British history in its various parts.
2    The State Coach is only the second new horse-drawn carriage to be built in more than a hundred years. The crafting of this coach took ten years to complete. It contains wood from King Henry Ws flags  the Mary Rose. The ship had sunk in 1545. Some more of the wood for the carriage has come from the very apple tree which had inspired the scientist Isaac Newton to discover the theory of gravity. The gil’JCd portions of the carriage have been made from 400 books of gold leaf.
3    Apart form these fabulous components for building the carriage, the State Coach is alsc constructed with parts of ships and metal from some of the greatest battles that England has won. The c.fjwn on the top of the carriage has been carved from the oak that was used to build the HMS Victory, Ad miral Lord Nelson’s flagship. In fact, it was this historic ship that in 1805, won the Battle of Trafalgar fc r Engiand. From the famous Battle of Waterloo, in which England had defeated Napoleon’s forces, is a lead musket ball. This piece of metal, from the casting of the Victoria Cross, has also been built into the cdadv The Victoria Cross incidentally was given during the Second World War as the highest award of military honour, and not just to British soldiers but to many soldiers of the Commonwealth, including India.
4    To make it a modern vehicle, the coach is fitted with six hydraulic stabilizers, covero a in gold leaf, to ensure a smooth ride for the royal passengers. There are also electrically operated wind ows and heaters, as 21st century inclusions.

The accelerating rate of climate change poses a severe risk to national security and acts as a catalyst for global political conflict This is the conclusion drawn up by US experts, according to a government report. At the US Centre for Naval Analyses, the Military Advisory Board found that climate change had induced drought in the Middle East, and Africa. The lack of food and water was affecting the populations of these countries to take recourse to extreme measures. It was escalating long standing ethnic tensions into violent clashes in the affected countries. In addition, the report predicted that an increase in catastrophic weather conditions worldwide will create more demand for American troops even as flooding and extreme weather, could damage naval ports and military bases.
2    According to official findings, the report signaled that it would influence American foreign policy as well. The report visualizes situations caused by the massive dislocation or massive drying up of the waters of the Nile, or of the major rivers of India and China. Pentagon officials also feel that the report would affect military policy of their country as climate change is having an impact on national security., whether by increasing global instability or by opening up the Arctic, or by increasing sea level and storm surge close to coastal installations. This is the first major study to draw the link between climate change and national Security. Thus American leaders are delivering major speeches wherein they are linking up climate change iskiies with that of national security. New regulations would also be put in place to cut pollution from coal fired power options.
3    The report follows a recent string of scientific studies that warn that the effects of climate change are already occurring and that more flooding, droughts, extreme storms, food and water shortages, and damage to infrastructure will occur in the future. Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper I wish to draw the attention of the readers to the acute water shortage faced by resident of Jawahar Basti. The problem can be diffused with the installation of ATM machines for vending drinking water to the residents for a nominal fee. As an engineer I have been privy to such technology which has been found highly successful in countries like Nigeria, where residents of colonies now access water from the local ATMs.
These machines will cut costs dramatically as trucks will no longer be necessary to bring water to the residents To operate the machines residents will be sold swipe cards and the cash collection and running of the machines can be given over to the community elders who will ensure that the machines are not vandalized. They can earn from the profits, giving them an incentive to carry out their task.

Ans. Disco War
The female performers were as renowned for their music as they were for their professional jealousies. But this time they had agreed to perform on the same platform, much to the delight of their audiences. While one of them belted out robust, rustic numbers accompanied on the dholak and the kartal, the other sang lilting melodies of the yesteryears with an orchestra of string instruments. The evening was just warming up and the organisers were pleased.
The chief guest had arrived a few minutes later but the organizers were told that he had just five minutes to spare, as he was scheduled to catch a flight back to his constituency. The organizers informed the performers about the change, and that is when the trouble flared up.
The two singers began arguing as to who should perform before the chief guest for those five minutes. They soon came to blows with the two performers pulling at each others’ hair. The accompanists also joined in the fray and used their instruments as missiles to attack their competitors. The audience was aghast. Absolute pandemonium broke loose and the security personnel, realizing that matters could turn ugly, whisked away the minister.
The show was halted and the two performers realizing their folly hung their heads in shame.

The troupe of twenty scouts pitched their two-bed tents on the lawns and set about lighting lanterns as they were not permitted a camp fire. They pulled out their guitars and began a round of Antakshari using film numbers as their cue. Their instructor taught them how to climb the trees in the back garden and they took a round of the herb garden to identify various medicinal plants growing there. The head gardener told them about the curative uses of the plants. The highlight of the day was the arrival of a space scientist from ISRO who showed them how to use a telescope to spot satellites in the night sky. Even the President strolled across to their camp and joined them in the satellite spotting.
As the girls tucked in for the night, the President sent them a tweet saying ‘Good Night. Sweet Dreams’. They sure had the sweetest of dreams!

Ans. (a) Calpurnia saw Caesar murdered in her dream. She saw a lioness giving birth to her young one, The graves were opening wide and ghosts were screaming.
(b)    People are fond of reading thrilling, spine-chilling ghost stories full of supernatural happenings and horror. His ghost stories were very successful so Jenkins, his publisher kept on pestering him for more such stories.
(c)    After hitting the snake the poet is full of remorse and regret. He had hit a beautiful creature which had not harmed him in any way. He said that his act was mean and petty.

Ans.In ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner,’ Coleridge draws our attention not only to the Ancient Mariner’s story, but to the act of storytelling itself. The Ancient Mariner’s tale comprises so much of the poem that moments that occur outside of it often seem like interruptions. We are not only Coleridge’s audience, but the Ancient Mariner’s. Storytelling is a preventative measure in the poem, used to dissuade those who favour the pleasures of society (like the Wedding Guest and, presumably, ourselves) from disregarding the natural and spiritual worlds. The poem can also be seen as an allegory for the writer’s task. Coleridge uses the word “teach” to describe the Ancient Mariner’s storytelling, and says that he has a “strange power of speech.” In this way, he compares the protagonist to himself: both are gifted storytellers who impart their wisdom to others. By associating himself with the Ancient Mariner, Coleridge implies that he, and by extension all writers, are not only inspired but compelled to write. According to this interpretation, the writer writes not to please himself or others, but to satiate a painful urge. Inherent in the writer’s task is communication with others, whom he must warn lest they suffer a similar fate. Just as the Ancient Mariner is forced to balance in a painful limbo between life and death, the writer is compelled and even condemned to balance in the liminal space of the imagination “until [his] tale is told.” Like a writer, he is equally enthralled and pained by his imagination. Both are addicts, and storytelling is their drug; it provides only momentary relief until the urge to tell returns. In modern psychological terms, the Ancient Mariner as well as the writer relies on “the talking cure” to relieve themselves of their psychological burden.

Ans. There were periods in which the residents had nothing to eat but one particular dish or kind of vegetable. They had nothing but endive for a long time, day in day out: endive with sand, endive without sand, stew with endive, boiled or baked in a casserole. Then it was spinach and that was followed Kohlraki, salsify, cucumbers, tomatoes, saw-sprout, etc. their weekly menu consisted of kidney beans, pea soup, potatoes with dumplings, rotten carrots and kidney beans. They had acute shortage of bread. They survived in the Annexe with whatever they got to eat. They had to eat a lot of sauer kraut for lunch and dinner daily. They didn’t get fresh vegetables every day. For supper they had beans, pea soup, rotten carrots, beans, etc. In the evening they had potatoes with gravy substitutes, beetroot salad or dumplings made from government flour, water and yeast. They were as hard as stones. Each week there was a slice of liver sausage and jam on the bread.

Mr. Van Daan was a businessman and a friend of Otto Frank. He also went into hiding with the Franks. Being a Jewish German refugee, they had to hide themselves in the Annexe. Mr van Daan didn’t get^along well with his wife and they often had fierce quarrels but they made up with each other soon. After the residents of the secret Annexe were arrested, he died in a gas chamber in Auschwitz towards the end of 1944.

Ans.Helen felt that in the country one sees only nature’s fair works and one’s soul is not saddened by the cruel struggle for mere existence that goes on in the crowded city. She felt that good people in the cities lived in fine houses whereas the poor people lived in dirty streets. Helen found that city life was torturous because of the unending noises. She found that the slum dwelling children in the city were ugly, withered and broken. Their struggle to survive was endless. The sun and the air are God’s free gift but these unfortunate creatures were denied both these blessings. They lived in darkness and breathed foul air all the time. For Helen, the lakes, woods, fields and meadows of the country were there to endure forever. She could discern the differences between the cities and the country quite keenly. It was more than noticing just a mere difference between walking on city streets and country roads. The rumble and roar of the city smote the nerves of her face and the ceaseless tramp of the unseen multitude was fretful to her along with the discordant cacophony of noises. The grinding of the heavy wagons on hard pavements and the continuous clanging of machinery characterised city life.
