CSIR Scholarship

CSIR Scholarship 2020: Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, CSIR Scholarship falls under the purview of the EMR Division of the HRD group. The scholarship aims to provide financial support to meritorious candidates in fields of medicine, science, and technology.

The CSIR Scholarships are tenable in various Government Research Establishments, Universities, IITs, PG colleges and other recognized institutions. Moreover, the scholarships can be availed only in India and are exclusively for Indian citizens.

CSIR Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

Candidates have to ensure that they fulfill the following criteria to be deemed eligible

  • Candidates must be Indian citizens.
  • Candidates must also have secured not less than 55% marks in the following degrees (50% marks for SC/ST/PWD).
    • B.Tech
    • MBBS
    • Pharma
    • BS (4 years)
    • Integrated BS-MS
    • M.Sc
    • BSc
    • Integrated MS-P.HD
  • Candidates must also have to qualify for the CSIR UGC NET exam.
  • Candidates must not have crossed the age of 28 as of the date of application. 5 years of relaxation will be applied to SC/ ST PWD and female candidates. OBC candidates will receive 3 years of relaxation.

CSIR Scholarship Rewards and Benefits

  • Selected scholars will receive a monthly stipend of INR 31,000 for two years
  • The university/ institution will also be awarded a contingency grant of INR 20,000 per fellow.
  • The stipend will increase to INR 35,000 per month after the initial tenure of two years
  • Scientists involved in R & D projects will receive an increase of 30%-35% in financial rewards.
  • Travel assistance offered to scholars for participating in symposia or conferences held abroad.
  • Candidates need not pay income tax for the stipend received – 10 (16) of the IT Act.

  • Applications are invited twice a year on an all India basis.

CSIR Scholarship Selection Process

Candidates are required to qualify a competitive written exam called the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by the CSIR. The exam is a 3-part MCQ exam consisting of General Science, Research Aptitude and subject-related concepts.

Candidates who successfully qualify the exam are informed individually. The initial offer of the JRF is two years and it will not be extendable. On completion of two years, and if the fellow is registered for P.hD, the fellowship will be upgraded to Senior Research Fellow (stipend will be INR 35,000 per month). The work/ research of the JRF will be subjected to scrutiny and verification before being upgraded to SRF. If the work of the JRF is not found to be satisfactory, the fellowship will be terminated.

Extension of the tenure for SRF to the 4th consecutive year will be permissible on the recommendation of a three-member assessment committee and the SRF’s progress report. Extension of the tenure for SRF to the 5th consecutive year will be permissible on the recommendation of a three-member assessment committee and progress report.

Note: The total tenure as  CSIR JRF plus SRF will not exceed five years.
