8. Why should attention be given to increase the yield of jowar? Discuss.
A. After rice and wheat, jowar is a third important crop in terms of area and production. Paddy and Wheat together occupy 50% of the gross cropped area of the country. The remaining food crops including jowar also are having a very low yield level. Much attention has not been paid to increase their productivity. This explains the present shortage of pulses in the country. So attention should be given to increase the yield of jowar. ;

2) Source of rivers : The Himalayas act as a huge reservoir of water for the north Indian rivers. Abundant rainfall, vast snowfield and huge glaciers are the feeding grounds of the mighty rivers of India. All these are perennial rivers and lifeline of north India.
3) This region is suitable for construction of multipurpose projects which strengthens the Indian agriculture.
4) The Himalayan ranges keep the country warm by obstructing the northern winds. This helps Indian agriculture to cultivate many varieties of crops.

16. How are human activities contributing to global warming?
A. Human activities contribute to climate change by causing changes in Earth’s atmosphere in the amounts of green house gases, aerosols and cloudliness. The largest known contribution comes from the burning of fossil fuels, which releases carbon dioxide gas to the atmosphere.
Green house gases and aerosols affect climate by altering incoming solar radiation and outgoing infrared radiation that are part of Earth’s energy balance. Changing their atmospheric abundance or properties of these gases and particles can lead to a warming or cooling of the climate system.
Since the start of the industrial era (about 1750) the overall effect of human activities on climate has been a warming influence. The human impact on climate during this era greatly exceeds that due to known changes in natural processes such as solar changes and volcanic eruptions.

18. Have you ever wondered how information about the people living in your locality or village, and the country as a whole is collected and recorded? Write your teachers’ experiences of collecting census data.
A. To collect census information, areas of the country are divided into enumeration districts. A census interviewer is assigned to each individual district. The interviewer is trained to fully understand each and every aspect of the census information needed. During the month before the census, the interviewer begins preliminary enumerations. The interviewer will visit each building in his or her assigned district and quickly and accurately complete the census questionnaires. Once the questionnaires have been completed, they are taken to a main census office to be checked and coded. The census information is then ready to be input into computers that can generate the required statistics.

A. Producing sufficient amount of foodgrains is an important requirement of food security. In order to increase the per hectare yield of a crop, necessary inputs haveto provided in a judicious manner. One way is to expand irrigation but use water in a manner so that this vital resource is shared and made available to all.
Planting drought resistant crops as per the local conditions, water harvesting and crop rotation are therefore used to raise production on a given piece of land. It is also important to ensure that soil and other natural resources are not damaged or depleted in the process.

21. Do you think the classification of economic activities into primary, secondary and services sectors is useful? Explain how.
A. To understand the behaviour of the different economic activities, and how they impact and in turn are impacted by the total economy, it is useful to qualify them in larger group of economic activities. One such a way of grouping economic activities is to classify them into primary, secondary and tertiary activities.
1) Primary economic activities include activities such as farming, forestry, fishing and mining. They also include the packaging and processing of the extracted materials.
2) Secondary economic activities include all industries manufacturing finished goods. This group consists of many broad industrial sectors such as automobile, chemicals, textiles, engineering equipment and construction.
3) Tertiary activities, also called service sector, provides services to the consumers as well as to other producers. This includes services such as distribution, retail, communication, transport, hotels and transport.
Division of all economic activities in these three groups enables us to study and understand many important characteristics of economic behaviour and to understand the nature and state of an economy.
