3.Silver is a better conductor of electricity than copper. Why do we use copper wire for conduction of electricity ?
Ans.1) The resistivity of silver is less than copper. Hence the conductivity of silver is more than copper.
2)If we use silver for conduction of electricity it will be better but silver is a costly metal than copper. Hence copper is widely used for conduction.

4.Why do stars appear twinkling ?
Ans.1) The twinkling of a star due to atmospheric refraction of star light.
2)Due to this fluctuations of refractive index of layers, stars appear twinkling.

Group – B
5.What is allotropy ? Write allotropes of carbon.
Ans.1) The property of an element to exist in two or more physical forms having more or less similar chemical properties but different physical properties is called allotropy.
i) Amorphous allotropes of carbon : Coal, coke, charcoal, iron, etc.
ii) Crystalline allotropes of carbon : Diamond, graphite, buckminsterfullerence.

6.What is the difference between roasting and calcinations ? Give one example for each ?

8.What are the various methods used in purification of the crude metal ?
Ans. Methods of purification of the crude metal:
1)Distillation
2) Poling
3) Liquation
4) Electrolysis.

9.What is meant by Latent heat of fusion ?
Ans. The heat energy required to convert 1 gm of solid completely into liquid at a constant temperature is called “Latent heat of fusion”.

                                                      Section-II
10.Refractive index of glass relative to water in 9/8. What is the refractive index of water relative to glass ?
Ans.

11.Why should we connect fuse in series in a house hold circuit ?
Ans.1) The fuse consists of a thin wire of low melting point.
2)When the current in the fuse exceeds 20A the wire will heat up and melt. The circuit then becomes open and prevents the flow of current into the house hold circuit.
3)Thus we can save the house holding wiring and devices by using fuses.

12.Define Mendeleeff’s periodic law ?
Ans.Mendeleeff’s periodic law: The physical and chemical properties of the elements are the periodic functions of their atomic masses.

13.Name the acid present in Vinegar.
Ans.Acetic acid (CH3COOH) (or) Ehtanoic acid.

14.How does the flow of acid rain into a river make the survival of aquatic life in a river difficult ?
Ans.1) Living organisms can survive only in a narrow range of pH change.
2)When acid rain flows into the rivers, it lowers the pH of the river water, the survival of aquatic life in such rivers becomes difficult

                                                           Section-III
Group-A
15.What is specific heat ? Why is the specific heat different for different substances ?
Ans.Specific heat: The specific heat of a substance is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of unit mass of the substance by one unit.
1)The temperature of a body is directly proportional to the average kinetic energy of particles of the body.
2)The molecules of the system have different forms of energies such as linear K.E, vibrational energy and P.E between molecules.
3)The total energy of the system is called internal energy of the system. When we supply beat energy to the system the heat energy given to it will be shared by the molecules among the various forms of energy.
4)The sharing will vary from substance to substance! The rise in temperature is high for a substance, if the maximum share of heat energy is utilised for increasing its linear K.E.
5)This sharing of heat energy of the system also varies with temperature. That is why the specific heat is different for different substances.

16.State the Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. Give a few applications of Faraday’s law of induction in daily life.
Ans.Faraday’s law : The induced EMF generated in a closed loop is equal to the rate of
change of magnetic flux passing through it.
Applications :
1.During security check, people are made to walk through a large upright coil of wire which produces a weak AC magnetic field. If we carry any iron, the magnetic flux linked with large coil changes and induced current in the coil triggers the alarm.
2.The tape recorder works on the principle of electromagnetic induction.
3.An induction stove works on the principle of electromagnetic induction.
4.ATMs work on the principle of electromagnetic induction

17.Explain an activity for the formation of artifical rainbow.
Ans.1) Take a metal tray and fill it with water.
2) Place a mirror in the water such that it makes an angle to the water surface.
3)Now focus white light on the mirror through the water as shown in the figure.
4)Try to obtain colours on a white card board sheet kept above the water surface.
5)We can observe the seven colours of VIBGYOR on the cardboard sheet.

20.Why there are exemptions in writing the electronic configurations of chromium and
copper ?
Ans.1) Degenerate orbitals are more stable when they are fully or half filled.
2)The predicted electron configuration of chromium (Z = 24) [Ar] 4s23d4 and copper (Z = 29) [Ar] 4s23d9 whereas experimentally it has been showed that the actual electron configuration of chromium [Ar] 4s13d9 and copper [Ar] 4s13d10.
3)In chromium and copper the electrons in 4s and 3d re-distributes their energies to attain stability by acquiring half filled and completely filled d orbitals.
4)So, Cr and Cu are having exceptional electronic configurations.

21.What is baking powder ? How does it make the cake soft and spongy ?
Ans.1) Baking powder is a mixture of baking soda and a mild edible acid such as tartaric acid.
2)When baking powder is heated or mixed in water, the following reaction takes place.
3)NaHC03 + H+ —> C02 + H20 + Sodium salt of acid.
4)C02 produced during the reaction causes bread or cake to rise making them soft , and spongy.

22.What is activity series ? How it helps in extraction of metals ?
Ans.
AP SSC 10th class General Science Model paper 2015-16 English Medium Set 4-19
3)The metals at the top of the activity series (highly reactive) can be extracted by electrolysis. Ex : To extract Na from NaCl.
4)The metals at the middle of the activity series (Moderate reactive) can be extracted by
i)reduction of metal oxide with carbon.
ii)self reduction of sulphide ores.
Generally the sulphide ores are roasted to convert them into oxides before reducing them to metal. The metal oxides are then reduced to the corresponding metal by using suitable reducing agent such as carbon.
5)The metals of the bottom of the activity series (less reactive) can be extracted by heating along, because they are often found in free state.
