    The presence of some biological, inorganic or physical substances which degrade the quality of water and makes it harmful is called water pollution.

    The substance which cause pollution are called pollutants. They may be inorganic, physical, organic or biological in nature.

    Major pollutants of water are:

    (i) Sewage from household

    (ii) Wastes from industries

    (iii) Dissolved salts

    (iv) Suspended materials like dust, clay etc.

    (v) Fertilizers

    (vi) Insecticides and pesticides
