    • Atomic number represents the number of protons in an atom.
    • It is denoted by Z.
    • The number of protons and electrons in an atom are equal that is why atom is electrically rieutcal.
+ Atomic number of an element remains constant in the formation of ions as protons do not participate in ion formation, only electrons are involved in this process.
Z = Numbcr of protons = Number of electrons in a neutral atom
